300109 – Picture of the day

Editor’s Comment: On a day where almost everyone attempted to portray the theme of “what touches you” using human elements in a more literal sense, the shot by Kevin stood out visually and also in how it appeals to the sight of readers. It could have been a look nice landscape of the sky, but the choice of a lamppost breaks that notion and is seemingly in “touch” with the diffused rays emerging from the thick clouds. The photographer’s efforts to communicate the arrival of dusk since the lampost has yet to light up signals a deeper meaning, perhaps the last rays of sunlight reaching the land surface before darkness falls. While a human figure might add more life to the picture, but could vie for attention with the lamppost which provides a hint of the time of the day.
It has to be noted that Alex’s picture, layered with a human element, carries a strong visual impact through a fine choice of black and white. The picture’s main focus answers the theme, but relays in a lesser way how the photographer was touched by it.

Editor’s Comment: Alex’s picture is the pick for today because he has conceptualized the theme in a different way. While Adeline and Kevin have tried to depict “the furious” through intensity of pace and colours to varying degrees of success, Alex’s spot-on portrayal of the energetic shuffling of mahjong tiles is the most creative of the lot in relation to treatment of a theme.
