Chessmates: Issac (left) and Osman (right) meet up during their off days for several hours of chess. They started their first game at 5p.m., and had played over 10 rounds of the game by 9p.m. “It’s cheaper than going to the pub, and also a good way to unwind,” said Issac.
Photographer’s Notes: I felt this was a classic scene of people enjoying a game of chess after a day’s work. What was interesting was the location of the people playing chess. While it was near a coffeeshop, the tables had been placed in a shelter that was undergoing renovation, as seen from the construction net in the background. The people around though – mostly Malays – were oblivious towards their surroundings and more interested in the game.
