Editor’s Comment: Considering that the theme is luxury, we might envision an abundance of colours but for Alex’s and Adeline’s, the downplaying of that captures the viewer’s attention. The choice of black-and-white gives another perspective to the word, like an anti-thesis. Theirs have stronger aesthetics than the rest – especially Alex’s with the fire and smoke/ash motion.
But on the counts of newsworthiness (or potential for it), both images are lacking based on solely viewing the images. On the criteria of Relevance to theme, Adeline’s is obvious while Alex’s makes people go, ‘hmmm’ but left wondering for too long.
Rachel and Kevin chose similar concepts, though without reading captions, the stories may differ. For the latter, we like the person’s slipper in hand depiction. This stands out. This seems to convey a visual representation for, ‘Life’s little luxuries’. Rachel’s subject of choice is not impactful enough to show a contrast but has strong potential considering the other elements within such as the young students vs old folk etc.
Both have potential for newsworthiness but Kevin gets the nod instead. It has a possible story behind it and it begs a question of, ‘why hold the footwear instead of wearing it?’. Technically, the focal point of the image is clear – its not the signboards nor cars, but the man with his sparse belongings.
