030209 – Picture of the day
Editor’s Comment: Today’s shots were studio based, impromptu and with minimal props. Lighting seemed to be the biggest problem in many of the shots submitted and can be clearly seen in the processed result.
Newsworthiness aside, Alex’s portrayal of Weiyang takes today’s picture of the day, although I must say that other nominees include Adeline and Kevin’s as well. Adeline’s photo would have taken the photo of the day, had it not been the obvious tweaking of the over-exposed areas. There could have been more effort done to airbrush away the lines of the layering to give a more seamless complexion of the subject’s face. Kevin’s photo on the other hand looks as though little processing has been done, with the exception of his subject’s feet. This resulted in the subject’s feet looking as though they did not belong to the body. But as compared to the other 5 photos, it is commendable that it is the only one which gives a more light hearted feel.
While Weiyang’s photo is the only one who uses hair light, his subject looks shocked and makes the viewer feel a little awkward. Rachel’s photo does not give much depth to the subject. The darkened left cheek of the subject coupled by the glass like look adds to the ice-cold effect, more could have been done to frame the shot better.
Ultimately, the choice goes to Alex’s photo, and stood out amongst the rest due to its surreality while at the same time giving a different perspective instead of the typical posed shots.
