040209 – Picture of the day
Editor’s Comment: Today’s theme is ‘Sunrise’. The difficulty in choosing the picture was deciding whether pictures had a clear relevance to the theme and the treatment given to it. Next was aesthetics and news value (or potential of).
Rachel’s obstacle was converting to b&w. What’s missing is the shade of the light. I cannot figure out the time of the day it was taken. The man’s activity could take place at any other time. The clarity and relevance to theme takes a hit.
Ade also opted for an environmental shot. What let her down was the aesthetics. For an everyday scene, a refreshing or attractive portrayal is needed to break through the mundane which was lacking in hers.
There is a different approach in Kevin’s but bordered on being too-literal.
Weiyang’s picture tried to experiment with lighting but the execution needs more polishing. It lacks the surrealness that’s associated with sunrise and also lacks life in it.
Alex’s pic was chosen because he gave fresh treatment to the word. That being said, the relevance is indeed not instantaneous and requires understanding of this cultural performance.With regards to aesthetics, though it does not invoke a ‘wow’ but the motion of the prop dragon and perfomers’ expressions clinches it for him.
Compared to the others, his image compels me to want to find out more.
