All Packed Up: A lone mannequin finds itself bundled up in a “china bag” beside a pasar malam store at Tampines Central. The two-weeks long bazaar will close tomorrow and stall owners have already begun packing to avoid jostling with each other during the dismantling phase.

Photographer’s Notes: I had other photographs in which the stall owner was shown in the midst of pre-packing. Eventually, I chose this one because I think a photo without a human subject will be a good change in style. I also feel that a photo without a human subject better brings out the mood of dismantling and leaving. It was already past midnight when I took this shot. And the lady stall owner was one of the few owners still packing up in the bazaar the size of a football field. I was drawn to the awkward position of the mannequin.

Occupational hazard: In the midst of bundling up tree branches along Buangkok Green and transporting them up the truck, George and his fellow worker slapped away streams of red ants on their backs. George, who hails from Sabah, has been a contract worker under NParks for 4 years. He was unaffected working amidst the ant-infested branches for most of the time, but succumbed when stings on his neck and head area got the better of him.

Photographer’s Notes: Instead of some of the action shots I’ve gotten during the time spent bitten by red ants, I feel a need to put the occasional spotlight on the lesser sights of lesser jobs in Singapore. Once again, I don’t expect a Singaporean to rummage through fallen branches or debris. Our regional neighbours provided the manpower for such chores, allowing Singaporeans to feel a sense of esteem not felt a couple of decades ago. I hoped to illustrate the little things we take for granted.

The Indian New Year: As we near the start of the Chinese New Year, stalls selling all kinds of paraphernalia have already sprouted out in Chinatown for the past 2 weeks. And it seems like the buying fever is not only affecting the Chinese, who used to be the only ones who celebrated this festival.

Photographer’s Notes: I was on my way home from doing FYP when we passed by this interesting looking flower stall beside the train station. At first, I only wanted to get a shot to signify the busy streets of Chinatown pre-CNY, but soon, this interesting Indian couple popped into my shot and I was lucky enough to get it.

Catch of the day: Nasri, a fisherman, proudly displays a pufferfish he had caught earlier on in the morning. “Pufferfish is rare, maybe one year we catch six times. That one our favourite because the meat tastes like chicken,” he said.

Photographer’s Notes: I saw a small group of people crowding around Nasri’s fishing boat and realised he was selling fish to them. I started shooting as a young man went onboard to choose some fish. After the group left, I saw Nasri rummaging through his container of fish before pulling out a huge yellow fish. “Pufferfish, pufferfish,” he said, waving his catch excitedly towards the other fishermen on the beach. It was a lucky day for Nasri because most of the fishermen had turned their boats back to shore much earlier in the morning due to the high tide and a poor fishing catch.
