140109 – Picture of the day

Editor’s Comments: Since today is a free shoot, it’s heartening to see a diverse array of photos being captured, from the metallic (WY’s) to the underbelly of teenage rebellion (KL). I particularly like the choices of angles that we shoot with, be it up close or portraying a lone figure in the vastness of space.

However, I will choose Kangli’s photo as the Photo of the day for 140109. It was a tough fight between his and Adeline’s and I will explain my choices.

Kangli’s photo is to me, an example of how layering should be done and how out-of-focus areas or bokeh is used to emphasize and draw attention on an object, in this instance being the girl on the ground. This color would not have worked as well in color, i think because of the various clashing colors in the shot. I can imagine the green leaves, th grey ground and the myriad colors of their tops all coming together. An eyesore. Hence, Kangli has made a good choice to converting it to black and white.

Also, I feel that he has captured the moment because of the look in the boy’s eyes as he glances to the right and the expression of the boy on the left as he glances up. The moment they connected and their relationship to the girl can be assumed from this gritty photo. Thus, the deserved photo of the day.

Adeline’s shot is good as well, coming from a low angle to emphasize the clouds (even if she did not want to). She placed the person in the middle and this focussed the image on him. Her use of the rocks as a subtle leading in works as well, as the gradual tones blended in well with the entirety of the photo.

However, what did not work for me was the smile on his face. It may be that the photog is trying to say something, but a layman who looks at it will think it is a posed photo without the caption. However, a very good try and she came close. Her use of wide angles is improving.

WY’s shot could have been wider. I would have liked to see the mass of bikes in their whole. And I would prefer it if the man was not chopped off. However, it was a good concept shot of putting the handlebar in the middle. It showed the POV of the rider and brings us more intimately into the photo.

Rachel’s shot, as Kangli says, is a little bland and of little interest. There’s no real focus and it feels like a snapshot. The colors look promising, but I want to see more. Of the guy and the factory.

As for Kevin, his shot today also seemed like a snapshot. I did not like the closed eyes, unless it was deliberate on his part. However, I do like the composition(except chopped off limbs) and the colors. The foliage in the background might prove too distracting.
