160109 – Picture of the day

Editor’s Comment: As always, themes are open to interpretation. Weiyang and Kevin’s pictures caught my eye for today’s theme of “To be announced”, and they exemplify different interpretations of a common theme. The former, messages/announcements to be made on a board; the latter, an end-in-waiting.
Visually, Weiyang’s picture stands out most because of its striking colours and patterns. Within the regular pattern of rectangular pink slips, there is a breathing space of red at the end, which makes for a very compelling composition. The unreadable words add some mystery to their content, and intrigues the reader to find out more. Yet this could also be a downfall – too little information to give the reader a sense of what is happening. The picture is interesting enough to capture the reader’s attention, but fails to sustain it.
Kevin’s picture is not as straightforward and needs more thought on part of the reader. While the words on the crow trap help to identity it, the eventual end of the crows might not be a thought that comes to mind immediately. It’s saving grace, however is the boy in the background that brings some of these thoughts to mind – why are the crows inside, what would happen to them etc. It is then that the picture starts to make sense – the pointed lines, the glare from the sun, all these seem to point towards the harsh reality for the crows.
Which picture would have a higher chance of being published in a newspaper? Both photos showcase distinct interpretations. But Kevin’s photo works better in terms of providing the most complete picture for the reader. We know that the crows are the focus, there is a human element that aids in bringing across the theme, and we get a sense of a familiar environment, which helps us connect and identify with the photo more easily.
