Editor’s Comments: Wei Yang’s take has strong news value and is also timely. While bak kwa queues are cliche shots during Chinese New Year, he has captured a mood of indignation regarding the custom of buying bak kwa during CNY. the faceless consumers, the arms akimbo stances and the nonchalance of the seller all adds to question whether the custom is worth practising (literally too, for bak kwa’s prices peak during this season). It must be mentioned too that Rachel’s picture of a gambler intrigues as well, and has hints of newsworthiness, but pales just a little in timeliness.

Towards the light: Commuters get off from Tanah Merah Train Station during non-peak hours. As Singapore’s population explodes due to the influx of foreign workers, it is getting rare to see such quiet scenes anymore.

Photographer’s Notes: Because I take the train to school, I realised that it is crowded no matter the hour I take it, and there is perpetually no seats to be had on the train. I also had to get used to the jostling and rude behaviour that is already part of the Singapore MRT experience. Hence, I wanted to make a photo to prove to myself there are quiet scenes in the busy train station as well.
