Editor’s Comments: Anything unusual or not usually seen will undoubtedly have a certain degree of news value, and in the case of Kangli’s picture, it seemed to fit into a softer category. There were other pictures with good portrayal of lines, but were either let down by the lack of a human element or the inadequate management of a situation involving people.

The chosen picture, while it remains the most abstract of the lot, is interesting enough to make a reader want to know some more. It does carry a hint of human intervention, and while it overcame the lack of human element, it relies more on the lines than what is making the lines. Although it requires a little more clue for the reader to decipher, it impressed upon me that the photographer showed an awareness of what took place – hence a sense of location – and was able to decide how he wanted to capture it.

In short, it shows a different line.

A trio of travelers: In the busy Dhoby Ghaut interchange, a station for 3 train lines to converge, 3 commuters take their respective journeys around Singapore.

Photographer’s Notes: I wanted to capture many many lines in a shot, and I finally achieved it with this shot of 3 moving escalators and 3 people in different positions around it.
