220109 – Picture of the day

Editor’s Comment: Adeline’s picture is the pick of the day because of what it presents as a single image. The other pictures have been well done in their own rights, but in terms of visual appeal and as a standalone picture, Adeline’s shot got the nod.
Rachel’s shot was artistically developed, was taken into consideration, and was eventually deemed a little too mysterious for my comprehension. What also affected my reading of the picture was the tilt. Could have a strong single image had it been framed more precisely.
Kangli’s shot would be a usual contender, but i reminded myself that in a picture of the day, it has to stand alone. While I got the hints that they were workers doing their rounds, and that they had a story in them, I feel it fits better as part of a photo essay pertaining to them.
Adeline’s shot carries the basic element of scale – big and small, near and far. It shows the Buddha statue looking afar towards the port. That seems to convey a certain mood, a kind of feeling that dusk is setting upon where the statue sits, and perhaps an indication of the state of Haw Par Villa.
On a slightly sour note, I do agree with Wei Yang’s comment that the protruding vegetation is a distraction. Since I wasn’t there to understand how the situation was like, I put the onus on the photographer to have surveyed the location and decided that that was the most ideal sight for the shot. But that, only served to take away some aesthetics and not the meaning of the picture.
