260109 – Picture of the day

Editor’s Comment: It’s pleasing to witness the range of pictures churned out by the photographers on a theme-less day. Each picture carried a strong meaning in what the photographer tried to convey, and picture of the day came out almost in a manner of elimination. From events relevant to the occasion, to portraits with a personal touch, to artistic portrayal of a lone figure in a city scape, to snippets of other lives within this festive period, the sweat-of-the-brow have been commendable.

After much deliberation, Kevin’s picture was chosen by only a whisker of a margin. That said, Wei Yang and Alex’s pictures were also compelling in their execution. Their pictures are injected strongly with artistic conceptualizing. While it remains attractive to the eye, some readers may not be able to connect with the isolated subject as immediately as perhaps, Kevin and Adeline’s pictures. In Wei Yang’s picture, while the eye is quickly drawn to the subject in red, the layer of architectural foreground is somehow not soft enough to provide framing for the man who is leisurely fishing. In a way, it dominates the eye and vies for attention with the guy.

Adeline has made a very personal portrait and has framed it in such a way that shows a bit more of who the lady might be. The adequate use of lighting has also illuminated her face in a gentle manner. As with all portraits, it is a challenge to make it stand alone and still be able to tell more about the subject. Her picture would undoubtedly be enhanced if she had included a useful portion of the foreground for additional layering. Personally, it remains a challenge to create a strong portrait that tells a whole story and is a joy to see such works steadily flowing out.

Kevin’s picture is a snippet of what took place during the first day of Chinese New Year, as hinted from the decor and coffee shop closed for occasion in the environment. In terms of timeliness, Rachel’s picture would have crushed Kevin’s to bits if not for a problem in execution. Nevertheless, Kevin’s picture tells a little more, shows a bit more interaction and perhaps provide a lesser seen sight on a Chinese New Year night. This shot would not have worked on any other day, but to have come across a subject doing what he did on a festive night, it connects the reader by just a whisker more.

Amidst the bustle: A man sits at a al fresco dining table outside Suntec City on the eve of Lunar New Year in Singapore. One of the busiest days of the year, the streets are packed with people doing their last minute shopping.

Photographer’s Notes: I myself was doing some shopping and after battling with the crowds, was on my way to another place when I saw this pensive scene unfold before me. It was only seconds before a car came onto the roads and spoiled the moment.
